What’s Happening Around the Web
Image Space Media likes to stay updated with the latest headlines around the web and we want to keep you in the loop, too! Here's some interesting buzz that caught our attention this week.
Get Savvy with Twitter 101
Has Twitter finally solved its user retention problem?
Last Thursday, the social networking website launched Twitter 101 for Business, a beginners’ guide to tweeting that includes ideas, tips, lingo, and case studies for businesses that want to make the most of their Twitter account. “From local stores to big brands, and from brick-and-mortar to internet-based or service sector, people are finding great value in the connections they make with businesses on Twitter,” the guide explains. Check out Twitter 101.
The Low-Down on Google’s Chrome OS
In our last update on ‘What’s Happening Around the Web,’ we highlighted Microsoft COO Kevin Turner’s excitement when Apple asked him to take down Microsoft’s new ‘Laptop Hunter’ ads. This week, Turner may cease to do cartwheels after Google announced the launch of its new Chrome OS, which will be available for consumers in the second half of next year.
Chrome OS promises to be an open source, lightweight desktop operating system that will compete directly with OS X, Windows, and Linux. According to the Official Google Blog, “speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS.” Considering that Windows contributes about $11 billion of annual operating income for Microsoft (about half of its total), we would be pretty scared if we were Microsoft. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to attack Google’s most lucrative business, search, with its recent launch of Bing.
We wonder what battle will be next in the war between Google and Microsoft.

Blogging for Bucks
In difficult economic times, blogging is a great way to earn some extra cash. Image Space Media would like to share a few tips and tricks for beginning bloggers, or anyone looking to earn additional revenue from their presence on the Web.
The most common strategy to generate income on a blog is selling advertisements. Google AdSense (www.google.com/adsense) is probably the easiest and most popular tool for selling ads. This free ad service allows bloggers to select several ads that match their blogs’ content and then pays them according to how many readers click on the ads. BlogAds, a service that connects bloggers with potential advertisers, is also a useful tool for selling advertising.
Another easy way to monetize your blog is to help companies sell their products through “affiliate” programs. These programs place an ad from an online company like Amazon.com or eBay on your site. Bloggers earn money every time readers click the ad, go to the company’s website, and make a purchase. The revenue generated from affiliate programs is called a referral fee and can earn as much as 10% commission per sale. Two popular affiliate programs are LinkShare (www.linkshare.com) and Commission Junction (www.cj.com).
Bloggers can also ask for contributions. Some readers are willing to show monetary appreciation for their favorite blogs; others may support a particular cause or issue the blogger frequently discusses and want to donate. Online payment services such as PayPal (www.paypal.com), Amazon's Honor System (www.amazon.com/honorsystem), and BitPass (www.bitpass.com) can add a contribution collection button to your blog and e-mail you when visitors donate.
One great feature of Image Space Media (www.imagespacemedia.com) is that it works alongside all of these strategies and can generate incremental revenue for your blog. Our in-picture advertising technology is completely compatible with Google AdSense and allows your visitors to view clean, relevant ads in an unobtrusive way. (To see a demo, click here: http://www.picadtesting.com.) Bloggers can view the number of impressions, clicks, and earnings on their domains and are paid on a pay-per-click model. The technology is incredibly flexible and lets bloggers manage their visitors’ experience on their site. Get started with Image Space Media today: http://www.imagespacemedia.com/publishers/register!

Picad Media Reviews
See what online publishers have to say about Image Space Media's in-picture advertising technology:
Sonjies Infomatrix: "Regarded as the 'first and leading provider of in-picture advertising for the Internet. Image Space Media lets publishers earn money whenever readers rolls their mouse over images on their sites and click on targeted ads. I'm very amazed by the technology used by Image Space Media." Continue reading here: http://www.sonjiexinfomatrix.co.cc/2009/07/earn-money-with-picadmedia.html
Techavenge: "New York based Image Space Media provides in-picture advertising for the Internet. Pretty good idea since people tend to click on pictures on blogs and websites. And less likely to click on actual ads." Continue reading here: http://www.techavenge.com/2009/07/picad-media-beta.html
The Cereal Entrepreneur: "Image Space Media: Very interesting concept of being able to use image real estate on sites to display ads. Of course they do everything short of image recognition. If they could do that, then they could very well be one of the most sophisticated ad platforms around. Nevertheless, a huge market to tap." Continue reading here: http://cereal-entrepreneur.com/?p=52

Twittergate: What We Can Learn From The Twitter Hacking
Earlier this week, a hacker broke into a Twitter administrator’s personal e-mail account and stole some of Twitter’s private financial documents and notes. The hacker sent 310 documents to TechCrunch, a popular technology blog, which then published a financial forecast for Twitter. Mike Arrington, TechCrunch’s founder and co-editor, stated that he plans to post the documents. This decision caused outrage among many readers across the Web.
Not only does the Twitter hacking raise questions about the security of storing personal and business information on the Internet, it also shows the importance of following good personal security habits, such as choosing strong and unique passwords. The Official Google Blog gives some helpful online safety tips that we should all be practicing:
• Avoid common elements (words or phrases from the dictionary) when choosing your password. Especially avoid words that are easy to guess like ‘password,’ the name of the site you’re logging into, birthdays, and addresses.
• Make your password as unique as possible. Add in numbers or non-alphanumerical characters and mix in upper-case letters. You can use similar-looking substitutions for parts of the password, such as “$” for “s” and “0” for “o.”
• Create different passwords for different sites so if one password is compromised, the others will remain secure.
• Do not share your passwords with anyone and if you suspect someone might have discovered one of your passwords, change it immediately.

What’s Happening Around the Web
Image Space Media likes to stay updated with the latest headlines around the web and we want to keep you in the loop, too! Here's some interesting buzz that caught our attention this week.
Microsoft Does Cartwheels
On Wednesday, Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Turner, told partners that Apple’s legal department called Microsoft asking them to take down their new ‘Laptop Hunter’ ads (below), according to Ars Technica. “It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I’ve ever taken in business. I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, ‘Is this a joke? Who are you?’ Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we’re just going to keep running them and running them and running them.”
Turner claims that these PC value ads show people (not actors) taken off of the street looking to spend less than $1000 on a laptop. The commercials are supposedly completely unscripted.
Even though the PC ads are less accurate now that Apple has made a few price cuts, it was probably not the best idea for Apple to make that phone call. And to add more fuel to the fire, Turner announced that Microsoft stores opening this fall will be placed near Apple stores. Ouch!
Spotlight On: FastPencil
This week, Image Space Media is recognizing FastPencil, a website that gives aspiring authors the tools to take the pain out of publishing their books, either in e-book or printed form. Some of its features include legal considerations, formatting the covers and spine, adjusting the size and templates, formulating the price and an innovative concept called “Guided Collaboration,” which allows the site’s community to provide feedback and improvements on your work. We thought some of our online publishers might be interested in FastPencil if they ever want to turn their blog into the next bestseller!
